Wife-beating, nationalist, tax dodger to be honoured

That has to be TB's best NOTW headline yet, but it's all true. Sticking with Edinburgh University, it seems that Sean Connery, the

nationalist supporting
,
tax dodging
,
wife beating
actor is to be awarded and honorary degree.

The University has a track record of getting these things spectacularly wrong, and it was only after
serious pressure
was applied by the students, that stripping ol' Bob Mugabe of his degree was even considered. It's not really turned out to be a good day for the University's press officers now has it. Despite his politics and the fact the he doesn't even pay tax in Scotland, this video alone should be enough to rule him out of contention:

It seems the
whole honours list
has turned out to be a bit of a nationalist love-in with
Annie Lennox
and
Sir Tom Hunter
also being awarded degrees.

So it's clearly simple logic - donate to the SNP and Edinburgh University gives you a degree.

Hat-tip -

Yes he is a nat but that aside he was brilliant in time bandits.
I think he could be awarded the degree on those merits alone!

FOI from the Uni what the justification for giving him an honour was. I wrote the paper for Michael Palin's honour a few years back and there has to be a lot of justificiation for links with Edinburgh and specifically the University.

did you even watch that video anon?

Surely this is just the Scottish ruling body getting as many scottish honours in as possible before they are unceremoniously shown the door (and the asphalt- close up).

Why should the fact that he supports Scottish independence and the SNP have any impact on his merit for receiving an honorary degree?

By the way, have either Annie Lennox or Tom Hunter actually donated any money to the SNP?

because it shows severe moral failings and blatent stupidity?

Yes former Lib Dem First Minister Jim Wallace and Labour's favourite civil servant Muir Russell are clearly well known for their nationalist sympathies.

I imagine Connery being from Edinburgh, patron of the Film Festival etc probably had a lot more to do with his honour than his politics.

Why has TB got a problem with, argubably, Scotland's leading University honouring, arguably, one of Scotland's favourite sons?

Tom Hunter...an SNP supporter? Since when? I think you may be getting him confused with someone else.

Oh and Edinburgh Uni...on the student side it's pretty Labour dominated.

Why do you constantly write in the third person? Neither Guido nor Alan Clark (two of your primary inspirations, I presume) does it consistently.

I'm genuinely curious about this.

Thanks.

Editor, I fear your reply at 09 April 2009 17:48 is exactly what was intended by this blog. Unfortunately, this only serves to highlight the political bigotry that exists within many British Unionists. To make light of domestic abuse by putting it on a par with an individual's support for a social democratic political party just makes TB look incredibly small-minded IMHO.

So, Connery's politics, tax affairs and alleged attitude towards beating women should debar him from receiving a honorary degree from a university in his city of birth. Yet because of his dodgy politics, your lot gave Irvine Laidlaw a place in the House of Lords, despite his tax-dodger status and well-publicised desire to be beaten by women.

You Tories are a strange bunch...
