Good spot about the empty jobs but it's a shame if the Tory party's official line on this is that the government can't be doing its job properly unless all the posts are filled.

The story should be that it shows how much padding there has been in ministerial / PPS ranks - and these empty posts show how government could be cut back.

But perhaps the lure of using those posts as patronage to keep Tory MPs happy under any Cameron government is too great :-)

I think you have to ask what benefit there is becoming a PPS right now:

1) They won't get anything done. There's no time and the Civil Service will back-pedal anything likely to be reversed post-election.

2) They don't get paid any more than an MP.

3) There's no hope of a ministerial post through it. There's no time to climb the ladder, and any surprise posts will be allocated on loyalty to Brown, not ability.
